The West Highland Museum was founded in 1922 by a group of Lochaber folk who wished to create a museum of and for the West Highlands
The West Highland Museum
The West Highland Museum is located in a listed building in the centre of town in Fort William. It aims to cover every aspect of West Highland history and also contains various other exhibits for archaeology and wildlife.
The museum has eight rooms on three floors, with an extensive collection of exhibits relating to the Jacobites, including the 18th century ‘secret portrait’ of Bonnie Prince Charlie which Victor Hodgson found in a London junk shop.
You can have a look at their many featured objects and enjoy their stories whilst learning more about the Jacobite cause. Museum volunteers have particularly noticed that fans of the Outlander books and TV series are making the Museum a 'must see' destination to learn more about the Jacobites!
And the best news… it’s totally free to visit!
